Serena stunned in Sydney

Elena Dementieva successfully defended her Sydney International title with a straight-sets victory over an injury-hit Serena Williams at the Olympic Tennis Centre.

The Russian fifth seed powered to a 6-3 6-2 victory, however the major talking point will be the knee injury sustained by the world number one just days ahead of the Australian Open.

Williams, whose left knee was heavily strapped during the match, was clearly distracted by the injury, and made a string of unforced errors during the defeat.

World number five Dementieva took an early lead and, although Williams broke back, she then slipped 5-3 behind before relinquishing the opening set.

The second set was much more straightforward for the Russian, who steamrolled her opponent before celebrating a 6-3 6-2 victory.
